A South Carolina deputy has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and assault in a deadly officer-involved shooting after he shot an unarmed suspect to death and allowed his police dog to maul an innocent person.
Treyvon Jonathan Sellers, 29, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly shooting 43-year-old William Dawayne Rankin to death during a vehicular chase in Florence, South Carolina, on May 26.
The fatal officer-involved shooting took place at National Cemetery Road, when Sellers was pursuing the suspect in a vehicular chase.
The suspect then rammed his car into a tree and ran inside a nearby home, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.
Sellers then pursued the man into the house through the back door with his police dog, which was not on a leash.
Sellers allegedly did not identify himself and announce his purpose before entering the house, according to state agents.
Sellers then allegedly ordered the dog to attack without knowing who was inside the house.
The police dog bit the unnamed homeowner, who had no connection to Sellers, according to state agents.
While the dog attacked the homeowner, Sellers allegedly opened fire and shot Rankin five times as he lay on a couch unarmed.
State agents alleged that Sellers failed to give the dog the right commands to stop attacking, allowing the animal to maul the homeowner for over a minute.
The homeowner suffered permanent injuries to his left arm and shoulder.
Sellers was later placed on administrative leave after the shooting, but was fired in July after an arrest in an unrelated domestic violence case.
After his arrest, Sellers was charged with voluntary manslaughter in Rankin’s death and faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted, according to jail records.
He was also charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and misconduct in office in connection to the alleged police dog attack.
Sellers could face up to 20 years if convicted under these charges.
He is currently held at Florence County Detention Center as he is slated to attend a bond hearing today.
